Tips for DIY Residential Painting

Posted on

If you are looking to freshen up the appearance of your residence, one of the easiest ways to give it a facelift would be by opting to paint it. However, some homeowners have found out the hard way that DIY residential painting may not be as easy it as it may seem. Without knowing how best to go about it, you may find yourself having to apply endless coats of paint to reach your desired finish and be left dealing with a splattered mess of paint. Luckily, there are a few tips that can come in handy in helping you create great looking walls without having to compromise your sanity. Below are some of the tips that you could use when you choose to embark on residential painting.

Tip 1: Ensure you thoroughly prep the walls

Granted, prepping the surfaces you are looking to paint may be one of the boring aspects of residential painting. Nevertheless, it is a crucial step to ensuring that your paint job is flawless and will remain intact for a significant time to come. Prepping the surface does not simply mean you clean the area. You would also have to ensure that the walls have been scraped of debris, sanded to become smooth and patched to fill in any cracks or crevices that may be on the walls. No matter how high quality your paint is, it will not create a smooth finish if your walls are pockmarked.

Tip 2: Use tinted primer

Another key element of successful residential painting is ensuring that you prime the walls. However, some homeowners do not know that using regular primer may not help them achieve their desired results. This is especially true if you are painting the walls bold colours that you would want to stand out. Instead of applying regular primer, opt for a tinted primer that matches the colour that you are applying. If you have already bought primer, you can simply add some of the paint you will use to slightly change the tint of the primer.

Tinted primer is beneficial for your paint job in several ways. Firstly, using a tinted primer will decrease the chances of stains bleeding into your paint job. Secondly, using a tinted primer will decrease the number of coats that you would need to achieve the desired hue. Lastly, priming the walls make it easier for the paint to adhere, which in turn decreases the chances of blisters in your paint job once the walls dry.
